This is one of the oldest units in the Union, having been formed on January 15th, 1855.
It first saw service when sent up to suppress the Langalibalele Rebellion in 1873, and has served in all the South African wars and rebellions since then.
After the Great War it was divided into two regiments, known as the 1st Royal Natal Carbineers, with headquarters at Pietermaritzburg, and the 2nd Royal Natal Carbineers, with headquarters at Ladysmith.
The title "Royal" was bestowed by the late King George V on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee in 1935. The present King is now Colonel-in-chief.
The regiment was allied to the 6th Dragoon Guards (now known as the 3rd Carabineers) in 1910. |
