How truly tragic?! I've walked past his almost invisible epitaph at Swartkops Air Base before & wondered why that little granite memorial was there - today my heart compelled me to find out who he was. I think it tragic, mournful that such courage, such selflessness should be 'entombed' in a little granite obelisk placed in public view for the world to forget along with other noble virtues. I was a little boy that saw many of my dad's colleagues fail to return from that war. Soldiers, fathers, officers & gentlemen they were. Oh, that Heaven would be their home. . . . may Father's Presence be their throne. . .

His memory lives on through us his family and dear friends, who still remember him as a gentleman, and hero. He loved what he did, he lived his dream to the end. We remember him for who he was. Untill we meet again.

Maj E "Gene" Kotze spent a part of 1981 (Ops Protea) at AFB Ondangwa as Impala pilot and volunteered for a tour as Ops Officer. Early in 1982 he flew a mission into Angola and went MIA. It was later established that he had been shot down near Cuvelai.
